Star Heating and Cooling
Cicero is a great town to live and work in. One of the things residents here enjoy the most is experiencing all four seasons in full. But as you know, winters in Cicero and Central Indiana can get downright cold – in a hurry.
That’s why you need a properly functioning furnace to keep you and your family warm, comfortable, and, most importantly, safe during the winter months. If you’re experiencing any issues with your furnace – both large or small – contact the HVAC professionals at Star Heating & Cooling to schedule an appointment.
Fortunately, in most cases, there are signs to look out for that indicate your furnace is in need of repair. Catching and fixing the problem early is paramount to avoiding a more serious and expensive problem down the road.
Here are some of the most common signs your furnace or heating system is in need of repair:
Energy bills can be high during the winter months, especially when temperatures stay below freezing for several days in a row. But if you did a double-take when you viewed your most recent bill, an inefficient or faulty furnace could be the culprit. When furnaces become old and inefficient, they tend to stay on for longer periods of time, increasing their wear and tear and leading to high energy consumption.
Although the issue could be more minor in nature – a dirty furnace filter, an improperly calibrated thermostat, or leaky ducts, for example – it could also be a sign you’re due for a furnace replacement in the near future.
Properly functioning furnaces make very little noise, aside from the gentle hum of a cycle in progress. So if you hear any harsh noises such as banging, rattling or grinding, there could be a loose or broken part. Contact an HVAC technician right away to inspect the issue.
Short cycling occurs when your furnace starts a cycle, shuts down quickly before reaching the set temperature, and starts back up again. This continuous cycle can cause comfort issues, high energy bills, and increased wear and tear. A number of problems can cause a furnace short cycling, including a dirty or clogged furnace filter, an oversized furnace, or issues with your thermostat.
If your furnace is suddenly producing no heat but you can hear the system running, first check that your thermostat is set to “heat.” If the thermostat is correct, check your furnace filter. If the filter is clogged and dirty, it will restrict the airflow from the furnace, making it seem like it’s not producing any heat. It may even cause the unit to shut down completely to avoid overheating. If there’s no heat, there may also be an issue with the pilot light on older furnaces or the electronic ignition on new units.
Poor airflow throughout the home, or hot and cold spots in certain rooms, can indicate issues with furnaces. There could be leaks in the ductwork or a dirty filter, or it may simply result from an inefficient or aging furnace. If you notice poor airflow, contact an HVAC technician to complete a full inspection of the system.
Of course, all furnaces will need repair here and there over their lifespan. But if you want to avoid frequent and untimely repairs, consider enrolling in Star’s Memberships.
